|
There are different kinds of Care homes, and everyone has different needs. Whilst you will check the suitability of any specific care needs that your parent or loved ones may have, these are 10 top tips that will help you in your decision making at what is often, a very stressful time. But don’t forget that you and your loved ones are the customers.
1. Ask your GP or social care team what they think or know about local care homes, and where they would choose if it was their family.
2. ‘Google’ each care home to review the profile at a local and national level. If there is anything that causes you concern, be prepared to ask specific questions when you meet the care home manager.
3. Call and email the care home with an initial enquiry: how long does it take them to answer the phone or respond to the email? Do they sound helpful and positive? Do they give you their name and the name of the person who can help you?
4. Make a short unannounced visit: do you feel welcomed when you arrive at reception? Does the receptionist smile and address you by name? Is there someone who can spend a few minutes with you even if it is only to make a formal appointment to come back another time?
5. Do the staff members make eye contact with you and other residents and are they smiling or looking harassed.
6. Do the staff members seem to be respectful of individual residents, calling residents by name, giving them time to respond?
7. Do the rooms have resident names on the door or just numbers? Does it feel personal when you walk round?
8. How long are bells or buzzers ringing for assistance, before anyone is able to respond?
9. Look at the notice board, how up to date is it? Is there a programme of events and interesting activities?
10.Do the staff members seem to be working well together and communicating politely and respectfully with each other?
